CMMI Levels
Level 1 - Initial
At level 1, the processes are unpredictable with poor control and reactive. The process areas are not defined at this stage.
Level 2 - Managed
At level 2, the process is characterized for projects and is often reactive. The process areas for level 2 are:
- Configuration Management
- Requirements Management
- Measurement and Analysis
- Project Planning
- Project Monitoring, and Control
- Process and Product Quality Assurance
- Supplier Agreement Management
Level 3 - Defined
At level 3, the process is characterized for the organization and is proactive. The process areas for level 3 are:
- Decision Analysis and Resolution
- Integrated Project Management
- Verification and Validation
- Organizational Process Definition
- Organizational Training
- Organizational Process Focus
- Requirements Development
- Product Integration
- Risk Management
- Technical Solution
Level 4 - Quantitatively Managed
At level 4, the process is measured and controlled. The processes are well defined for both projects and the organization itself. The process areas for level 4 are:
- Organizational Process Performance
- Quantitative Project Management
Level 5 - Optimizing
At level 4, the focus is on process improvement. Once the process is mature enough to deliver quality work, there will always be chances to further improve it by regular analysis. One cannot consider a process as 100% perfect, as there will always be possibilities to improve it. The process areas for level 5 are:
- Casual Analysis and Resolution
- Organizational Performance Management
